Two in the afternoon on Wednesday, August 20. That is the moment the 2026-27 undergraduate admission cycle stops being something you can still fix.
The story so far
J&K's centralised admission portal, jkadmissions.in, opened on May 9 for admission to Four-Year Undergraduate Programmes and five-year Integrated PG programmes across the Union Territory's government degree colleges. Seats were allotted on Class 12 merit — not CUET — through three regular allocation rounds, a spot round in late June, walk-in and rolling direct-allocation rounds notified on July 16, and a continuation-of-admissions notice on July 28.
We covered the last registration deadline earlier this week, when the window to register fresh for the leftover-seat round closed on August 14. Seats were still vacant after all of that. So the Directorate of Colleges did something it had not done at any earlier stage of this cycle.
What's new: the process has come off the internet
In a notice dated August 11, the Directorate of Colleges, Higher Education Department, notified an in-person counselling round for admission to left-over seats for the 2026-27 UG/IPG session. Every previous round in this cycle was an online allocation — you submitted preferences, the system allotted, you paid. This one is not. Candidates have to physically turn up at a college.
The sequence, as notified:
August 12-14 — fresh registration and submission of preferences for the in-person round. This window has closed.
August 14 — colleges publish their own in-person counselling schedules.
August 17-19 — on-campus counselling sessions, covering Open Merit, CDP and Achievement categories.
August 20 — all admission formalities to be completed. The portal's own countdown ends at 14:00.
The registration fee is ₹200, non-refundable, and the round is open for J&K (UT) degree colleges only.
If you registered by August 14, read this part twice
The single line in the notice that decides whether you get a seat is this one: candidates must attend the counselling session as per the schedule notified by the concerned college.
That schedule is not on the central portal. It is published by the individual college, and each college sets its own dates and reporting times inside the August 17-19 window. Nobody will call you. If you registered, submitted preferences and then stopped checking, you can lose a seat you technically qualified for simply by not knowing when to show up.
So: find your college's notification, note your reporting slot, and go. Carry originals — Class 10 and 12 marks certificates, date-of-birth proof, category or CDP certificate if you are claiming under one, achievement certificates if you registered under that category, domicile, and the fee receipt from your registration.
One detail that trips up candidates every year: if you registered under a reserved or special category, the counselling desk will want the certificate in the exact form the category requires, not a provisional slip or an application acknowledgement. CDP claims and achievement-category claims are both verified at this stage rather than taken on trust, and a claim you cannot document on the day is simply dropped — which can move you down the list at the one round where there is no next round to recover in.
What if you did not register in time?
The in-person round is not the only thing still running. Walk-in admissions continue in parallel, first-come-first-served, for programmes that do not require counselling. That is a genuinely separate route and it is worth checking college by college rather than assuming everything is shut.
Before you travel anywhere, use the portal's own live pages. It currently publishes college-wise seat status, CP rank lists, cut-off percentages and a list of rejected candidates. The seat-status page is the one that saves a wasted trip: it tells you which colleges actually still have vacancies in which programmes, so you can walk into a college that has room rather than one that filled up in Round 2.
Check the rejected-candidates list too. If your application was rejected for a document defect rather than on merit, that is a different problem with a different fix, and you want to know now rather than on August 20.
And if August 20 passes without a seat
It is not the end of the year, but the options narrow and they are worth naming plainly.
The University of Jammu's Centre for Distance and Online Education extended its admission deadlines on August 10 for B.A. and B.Com. Semester 1 in ODL mode, for PG Semester 1 in ODL across Commerce, Dogri, Economics, Education, English, Hindi, Political Science, Punjabi, Sociology and Urdu, and for its online M.Com. and M.A. English programmes. Distance mode is a real degree from the same university, and for someone already working or repeating a subject it is often the better fit anyway.
The one thing not to do is wait passively for another round. This cycle has already run three allocation rounds, a spot round, rolling rounds, walk-ins and now an in-person round. The Directorate has been unusually generous with second chances. This is the last one it has notified.
The short version
Registered by August 14? Find your college's counselling schedule and attend between August 17 and 19.
Everything must be finished by 2 PM on August 20.
