The story so far
Jammu has been under a rolling rain warning for a week. We reported on 9 August that the MeT had forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across parts of Jammu division, and then updated on 10 August when the window was pushed out to 15 August rather than closing on the 11th.
What's changed
Two things, and both matter.
First, the severity has been upgraded. The IMD has moved Jammu division from a yellow alert to an orange alert. Second, the window has been extended again, now running 12 to 16 August — a day beyond what we last reported, and straight through the Independence Day weekend.
The alert covers Jammu, Udhampur, Reasi, Rajouri, Poonch and the Chenab Valley. The forecast is for activity that is fairly widespread to widespread and light to moderate, with isolated heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds, and with the possibility of landslides, shooting stones and flash floods at vulnerable places. Isolated cloudburst events are flagged as possible in the higher reaches. Maximum temperatures are expected between 31 and 35 degrees Celsius, so it stays humid rather than cool.
What it means on the ground
Highway travel: stretches of the Jammu–Srinagar national highway have been running single-lane. Standing police advice for the corridor is to travel in daylight only and to avoid unnecessary halts between Ramban and Banihal.
Reasi: the administration restricted heavy vehicles on the Nau Devian bridge for 72 hours from 6pm on 11 August during strengthening work.
Rivers: the Ujh in Kathua crossed the danger mark around midday on 11 August before receding.
Classes: as of today, no school or college closure has been announced. Assume you are expected in unless your institution says otherwise — and check its own notice board rather than a forwarded message.
What to do differently
If you had a Katra trip, a Patnitop weekend or an outstation bus for an exam or interview planned for this weekend, this is the window to move it or build slack into it. Confirm road status with the traffic control units at Jammu, Ramban or Srinagar before setting out rather than after. Stay away from swollen nallahs and riverbanks, which is where most monsoon incidents in the division actually happen, and do not attempt to cross a flooded crossing on a two-wheeler.
The IMD expects the system to weaken from 16 August. We will update again if the window moves a third time.
