The story so far
On October 11, Jammu was hit by flash floods after a record burst of rain; our earlier report, Jammu Gets 185.6 mm of Rain in Three Hours, covers what fell and where. This update is about what happens next for people whose homes and property were damaged. (File photo of Jammu and the Tawi.)
What's new
Speaking on Monday, October 12, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary said the government is assessing losses and damage to properties, and that affected residents will be compensated "as early as possible". Loss reports have been sought from the Deputy Commissioner, Jammu, and the Commissioner of the Jammu Municipal Corporation. He said restoration work will start without delay, adding, "We know that the people have suffered damages," and that the rain had caused extensive damage in residential areas besides damaging public infrastructure.
The same day, BJP MLA for Jammu North Sham Lal Sharma visited flood-hit localities, gave on-the-spot directions for officials to assess damage, and called the Divisional Commissioner, the Municipal Commissioner and the SDM Jammu North. He stressed that restoration should involve lasting measures rather than temporary relief.
What has not been announced
- No compensation amounts, eligibility rules or application process have been published.
- No figures for damaged homes or total losses were given in the reports we reviewed.
- No timeline for the assessment beyond "as early as possible".
The report also mentions a woman reported missing at Raipur Domana; the Deputy CM expressed concern and prayed for her safe recovery. We have no further confirmed update on her.
What to do now
If your family, hostel room or rented flat was damaged, photograph the damage with date and location, keep bills and repair estimates, and report it to your ward office or the Deputy Commissioner's office so it is on record when the assessment lists are drawn up. We will update this piece when the government publishes an assessment or a relief process.
