The night before Dussehra, the Bana Singh Stadium in R S Pura filled for a dangal, the open-air wrestling contest that still anchors festival season across the Jammu belt.
The Dangal Committee, R S Pura organised the Wednesday, 21 October card, which ran to more than 100 bouts with wrestlers from several regions. The main bout was won by Shera Gujjar of Haryana, who took Rs 1 lakh; Bhupinder Ajnala of Punjab was the runner-up with Rs 80,000. The first "maali" prize was Rs 1.80 lakh, and total cash prizes passed Rs 6 lakh, Greater Kashmir reported.
The chief guest was Satish Sharma, the minister for Food and Civil Supplies, IT, Youth Services and Sports, and Science and Technology. The report, based on an official statement, says he spoke of government support for promoting traditional sports; it carries no direct quote, so we do not attach one.
Notably, both finalists named came from outside J&K. For Jammu's young wrestlers the dangal circuit is one of the few places to meet that level of competition at home, with prize money large enough to matter. The report does not list local winners or say whether any Jammu wrestler reached the later rounds.
