The Reserve Bank of India raised its policy repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.5% on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, and changed its stance from "neutral" to "calibrated tightening", according to a PTI report carried by Greater Kashmir. It is the first increase since February 2023, when the rate rose 0.25 percentage points to 6.50%.
The decision in numbers
- Repo rate: up 25 basis points to 5.5% (the report does not state the earlier rate; the size of the move implies 5.25%).
- Stance: from neutral to calibrated tightening.
- Vote: the Monetary Policy Committee decided unanimously.
- Retail inflation: 4.82% in August, up from 4.45% the month before.
Why the RBI did it
The stated aim is to tame rising inflation amid the continuing West Asia crisis. The report also points to spiralling oil prices and to recent 25 basis point hikes by the US Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank. The committee underlined that a rate cut is unlikely in the near term in current conditions.
What it means for borrowers
The report says home, vehicle and corporate loans will become more expensive and that EMIs for existing borrowers will rise. In general, loans pegged to the repo rate reset after a hike, and how fast depends on the lender and the loan's reset terms, so check your own loan agreement or ask your bank. The report does not cover education loans, personal loans or deposit rates, and we have not made any estimate of our own for them.
What to do with this
- If you have a floating-rate loan, ask your lender when the rate resets and how the change is applied: a higher EMI or a longer tenure.
- If you are planning a vehicle, education or home loan, compare offers now and ask whether the rate is fixed or floating.
- Do not read a single hike as a forecast. The RBI says only that a cut is unlikely soon; it has not announced further hikes.
For young Jammu residents taking a first loan for a bike, a laptop or a course, the practical point is that borrowing is likely to stay costlier for a while, and that the fine print on resets matters as much as the headline rate.
