If you sell goods out of Jammu, or into it, the return trip has just got cheaper on paper. A Railway Board freight marketing circular offers a 50% discount on the return leg for traders who book parcel coaches in advance, in both directions, on Joint Parcel Product-Rapid Cargo Service (JPP-RCS) trains.
How the maths works
A round-trip booking is charged at 1.5 times the normal one-way freight rate, rather than twice. The scheme covers all JPP-RCS routes and runs for one year as a pilot. The report names orchardists, fruit growers and cargo aggregators as likely users, particularly Kashmir's fruit growers during the apple season sending produce to markets such as Jammu, Delhi and Mumbai.
What Jammu division is saying
Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu, says the scheme will significantly cut freight costs, and the Jammu division of Northern Railway has urged traders, industry associations and logistics operators to use it.
Not yet known
The report does not give the one-way rate, the booking procedure, eligibility conditions or a start date. Anyone interested should ask the Jammu division's commercial branch before planning around the discount. For young sellers and small e-commerce businesses, the potential saving is on freight only; it does not change what a parcel train can carry or when it runs.
