Katra is about 50 km from Jammu, and for nine days this month it will have more going on than usual. The Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Ramesh Kumar, reviewed preparations for the Navratra Festival 2026 at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board office, with the festival scheduled for 11 to 19 October in Katra, according to JK Monitor, which dates the meeting 25 September. Here is a practical checklist for getting there, getting registered and not getting caught out.

The dates and the programme

  • Festival dates: 11 to 19 October 2026, per the reports of the review meeting.
  • Items named in the review: Shobha Yatra, Prabhat Pheris, an All India Devotional Song Competition, cultural programmes, Bhagwat Katha, a wrestling competition and a Kavi Sammelan.
  • Day-by-day schedule, venues and timings: not announced in anything we could find. We did not locate an official 2026 line-up, so we are not printing one. The Shrine Board and J&K Tourism are the places to check closer to the date.

The listing on JammuBeat's events page carries the same dates; this piece is about the logistics around it.

Getting there from Jammu

By road. The Shrine Board's own how-to-reach page puts the distance at approximately 50 km, says buses run at a frequency of 10 to 15 minutes, and says a taxi would normally take 70 to 80 minutes. The same page says ordinary and luxury buses are available and that the road trip takes around 2 hours, so allow for the longer figure when roads are busy.

By rail. Katra is a rail terminus, with the line running Jammu, Bajalta, Sangar, Manwal, Ramnagar, Udhampur, Chak Rakhwal and Katra on the Shrine Board's page. Jammu Tawi is also a scheduled stop on the festival special from Katra to Varanasi. Two earlier JammuBeat pieces are useful if you are planning a rail trip: our guide to Northern Railway's three festival specials and the note that Jammu Tawi has swapped its entry and exit points.

The Delhi special. According to The Tribune's report of the Northern Railway announcement (see our earlier guide above), a New Delhi to Katra festival special (04081/04082) runs four trips each way for Dussehra: 8 to 11 October from New Delhi and 9 to 12 October from Katra. Note that these dates straddle the festival's opening day. Stoppages, fares and booking dates were not in the report.

Vande Bharat. A Vande Bharat Express (22477/22478) links New Delhi and Katra via Jammu Tawi, according to Wikipedia's listing. Sources we saw disagree on its run days and timings, so check the current timetable on IRCTC or the National Train Enquiry System rather than relying on us.

Register before you set out for the shrine

The Shrine Board's page says registration is free and fully computerised, and is available online at the board's website as well as at the Yatra Registration Counter (YRC) near the bus stand in Katra, with a second counter (YRC-II) about a kilometre away on Udhampur Road. Pilgrims receive an RFID yatra access card, and the page says you must cross the first check post at Banganga, about 1.5 km from the YRC, within six hours of the card being issued. So register when you are ready to walk, not hours earlier.

The board also says it is the only statutory and legal authority for registration and that no other organisation is authorised to issue it. If anyone offers to register you for a fee, that is a sign to walk away.

What to book early

  • Trains. The Delhi and Varanasi specials are reserved services. Search by train number, as special trains often do not turn up in a plain route search.
  • Shrine Board rooms. The board runs accommodation in Jammu (Vaishnavi Dham, Kalika Dham, Saraswati Dham near the railway station) and in Katra (Niharika Yatri Niwas, Shakti Bhawan, Ashirwad Bhawan at the bus stand, Trikuta Bhawan). It lists dormitory beds at Rs 150 a bed and advises booking well in advance, noting weekends see heavy occupancy. Bookings are online, at guest-house receptions or at the Niharika complex counter. Festival-week availability is not something we could check.
  • Your return. The Delhi special's return runs are 9 to 12 October, so a longer stay needs a different train; check before you commit.

What officials said they are fixing

For a town this size, the preparations matter to anyone on the road. The reports say the Divisional Commissioner asked for road repairs and blacktopping before the festival, uninterrupted power with backup transformers, steady water supply with standby tankers, and street lighting, sanitation drives, mobile toilets and fogging from the Municipal Committee. Police, tourism, district administration and Shrine Board officials were part of the review. Reasi's Deputy Commissioner and the DIG of the Udhampur-Reasi range were named among those present.

Don't get caught out

  • Confirm the programme before building a trip around one event; nothing official is out yet.
  • Register only through the Shrine Board, online or at its counters.
  • Read train numbers and run days carefully.
