Mark two dates: September 10 and October 9. That is the entire window in which you can file an application against the J&K Services Selection Board's newest advertisement — Notification No. 08 of 2026, notified on 5 August, covering 518 posts across four government departments. Miss it and the next comparable opening is anyone's guess.
This is the largest single JKSSB advertisement of the year so far, and it is unusually lopsided: more than four in five of the vacancies sit inside one department.
Where the 518 posts actually are
- Health and Medical Education — 421 posts. The overwhelming bulk of this advertisement. If you hold a paramedical, nursing, laboratory or allied-health qualification, this notification is aimed squarely at you.
- Higher Education — 48 posts.
- Agriculture Production — 46 posts.
- Labour and Employment — 3 posts.
The vacancies span UT, Divisional and District cadre posts, which matters more than it sounds: a district-cadre post ties your posting to one district, while a UT-cadre post can send you anywhere in the Union Territory. Check which cadre a post carries before you rank your preferences.
Am I eligible?
Three gates, and all three are hard:
- Domicile. You need a valid Jammu & Kashmir domicile certificate, held on or before the closing date of applications. Not applied-for. Held.
- Age, reckoned as on 1 January 2026. Open Merit candidates must be no older than 40. Reserved-category candidates get until 43, and physically challenged candidates until 42.
- Post-specific qualifications. These are not uniform across the 518 posts — they are set out post by post in Annexure-A of the official notification. Read your post's row rather than assuming a general degree covers it.
What it costs
The application fee is ₹600 for General and other categories, and ₹500 for SC, ST-1, ST-2, EWS and PwBD candidates. Applications are filed online at jkssb.nic.in; there is no offline route.
How you will actually be selected
An objective-type written examination, conducted in English, followed by document verification for those who make the cut. There is negative marking — one-fourth of a mark is deducted for every wrong answer.
That last detail changes how you should sit the paper. With a quarter-mark penalty, four confident answers are worth more than eight guesses. Candidates who blanket-fill an OMR sheet to "maximise coverage" routinely score below candidates who attempted fewer questions and left the rest blank.
A step-by-step, so nothing is left to the last week
- Now — before September 10. Pull up Annexure-A and find the post you actually qualify for. Confirm your age against the 1 January 2026 cut-off.
- Now. Check that your domicile certificate is in hand. If it is still with the tehsil office, that is this week's errand, not October's.
- Now. Assemble the paperwork: matriculation certificate for date of birth, qualification certificates and marksheets, category certificate where applicable, and a recent photograph and signature in the formats the portal asks for.
- September 10 onwards. Register and file. Do not wait for the closing week — the portal is at its slowest when everyone else has had the same idea.
- Before you submit. Re-read your own form. Category, date of birth and qualification entries are the fields that most often get a candidate rejected at verification, long after the correction window has shut.
- October 9. The window closes. There is no grace period in the notification.
How this fits the rest of the year
This advertisement lands in an already-busy season. JKSSB has published its written-exam calendar, with the first papers from earlier advertisements starting on September 6 — so a candidate could plausibly be sitting one JKSSB exam while filing for another. And on the health side specifically, the Board's 421 posts are not the only route: roughly 700 to 800 more paramedical posts are due through JKPSC by December. Two separate recruiting bodies, two separate application processes, and no reason not to be in both queues.
If this is your first government application
A few things trip up first-timers on JKSSB portals specifically, and all of them are avoidable.
- The photograph and signature specifications are enforced. Portals reject uploads that are the wrong dimensions or file size, and they do it at the last step, after you have filled everything else in. Get these right before you start, not during.
- Your name must match across documents. A middle name on the matriculation certificate that is absent from the domicile certificate is the kind of mismatch that surfaces at document verification, months later, when there is nothing to be done about it.
- Keep the fee receipt and the final submitted PDF. Download both. An application that the portal shows as incomplete because the payment did not reconcile is a solvable problem only if you can prove the payment.
- Category certificates need to be current. Some category certificates carry validity periods. Check yours rather than assuming the one in the file still stands.
A note on the cadre choice
Because this advertisement spans UT, Divisional and District cadre posts, the same qualification can put you in front of very different jobs. A district-cadre post means a career largely inside one district — attractive if you want to stay near Jammu, limiting if you want mobility or faster promotion. A UT-cadre post means the opposite. There is no right answer, but there is a wrong way to decide it, which is to notice the distinction only after the appointment letter arrives.
The bit people forget
An advertisement with 421 health posts in it will attract an enormous field, and the written exam is the only thing standing between that field and the appointment letters. The five or six weeks between now and the closing date are worth more spent on the syllabus than on refreshing the portal. Previous JKSSB objective papers are freely available, the negative marking is known, and the pattern is not a mystery.
The one thing you cannot fix later is a document you did not have on the closing date.
