About 370 MW: that is what J&K's own power stations are generating as pre-winter begins, according to figures cited by the Northlines newspaper from official documents. The UT imports nearly 84% of its power from other states.
The figures as reported
- J&K-owned plants have a capacity of 1,197 MW but generation fluctuates between 360 and 400 MW. Of the current output, 298 MW comes from Baghlihar-1, 49 MW from other Kashmir-division projects and 20 MW from independent power producers in the Jammu division.
- The State Load Despatch Centre recorded loads of 1,170 MW in Kashmir division and 1,130 MW in Jammu division.
- Centrally owned hydel projects in J&K have about 2,200 MW of capacity and are generating about 1,100 MW.
Our own arithmetic: the two divisional loads add up to 2,300 MW, so 370 MW of local generation is roughly 16% of it, which fits the "about 84% imported" headline. This is our calculation from the reported numbers, not a figure from the report.
What regional forecasts show for October
The report cites revised Northern Regional Power Committee (NRPC) figures for J&K and Ladakh together: in solar peak hours, 2,450 MW available against 2,850 MW required (a 400 MW shortfall); in non-solar hours, 2,535 MW available against 2,872 MW required (337 MW short). It also says peak demand this fiscal year may reach 3,813 MW and that J&K may need about 450 MW more at peak over three years.
What the report does not say
It gives no winter load-shedding schedule, no named official quotes, and no baseline for the "70 per cent" fall in local generation mentioned in its sub-headline. We have not verified the figures against the NRPC or the Power Development Department, so treat them as reported rather than confirmed.
Why it matters for readers: winter heating load and exam season arrive together, and shortages are managed through purchases and scheduling that residents see as supply cuts. Watch for official notices from the Power Development Department.
