A couple crossing the Kaghote nallah in Udhampur was swept away by rising water on Friday — a grim preview of what the Meteorological Department says is coming for the rest of the weekend. MeT has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall for a few districts of Jammu division from today, August 9, through August 11, with brief intense showers likely elsewhere in the division and across Kashmir.
The department's advisory is blunt: torrential rain and intense showers "may generate flash floods and landslides at vulnerable places and cause waterlogging in low-lying areas." Residents have been told to stay away from nallahs, landslide-prone stretches and other vulnerable spots, and district authorities have been directed to remain on alert.
What this means today and tomorrow
Avoid nallahs and low-lying crossings — especially anywhere you'd normally wade or drive through moving water, in Udhampur, Ramban, Reasi, Doda and similar hill districts.
Rethink hill travel — Patnitop, Bhaderwah, Sanasar and Chenab valley routes carry the highest landslide risk during this window; postpone non-essential trips if you can.
Watch for waterlogging on low-lying city stretches if you're commuting to college or work in Jammu city itself.
After August 12, the outlook eases to light, intermittent rain through August 17 — so this is a short, sharp window rather than a prolonged spell.
If you have exams, coaching classes or travel plans over the next three days, build in extra time and keep an eye on local advisories — colleges and schools have shortened or shifted schedules on shorter notice than this in the current monsoon.
