Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC) Jammu has started specialised flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry (IHC) services for cancer diagnosis, Greater Kashmir reported on October 18.
What the two tests do
As explained by experts at the launch event, IHC helps characterise tumours, tell similar-looking cancers apart and assess biomarkers. Flow cytometry is key for diagnosing and classifying blood and lymph cancers such as leukaemias and lymphomas. Speakers stressed using both alongside histopathology and molecular testing. The stated aim is earlier, more precise classification and support for personalised treatment in J&K.
Who is behind it
The services are a collaboration between GMC Jammu, the State Cancer Institute (SCI) Jammu and the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (HBCHRC), New Chandigarh, run under the Association of Academic and Clinical Pathologists and the J&K chapter of the Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists.
The launch workshop
On Saturday, October 17, GMC Jammu held a CME-cum-workshop titled "Transforming diagnosis with Immunohistochemistry and Flow Cytometry" in its auditorium. Parallel hands-on sessions covered IHC in GMC Jammu's Department of Pathology and flow cytometry at SCI Jammu, including lab workflows and quality assurance. Dean Dr Ashutosh Gupta described the capabilities as aimed at strengthening comprehensive cancer care.
What is not stated
The report does not give patient charges, referral steps, or when the tests will be open to all patients. For medical, paramedical and pathology students in Jammu, the story shows where hands-on training in these methods is being offered. The photo is a file picture.
