Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) ran a two-day workshop at GMC Jammu on 7 and 8 October 2026 on cancer prevention, screening and survival.
What was covered
The sessions looked at practical, evidence-based ways to prevent and screen for four cancers: breast, oral, cervical and gastric. Participants discussed gaps in the existing health system, locally suited interventions, expanding screening, timely diagnosis and stronger referral systems. Other sessions covered implementation science and how to collect and monitor reliable health data; an ICMR programme officer, Dr Pulkit Verma, led one on data management and the REDCap platform.
Two proposals
- A parallel session developed a proposal to improve breast cancer survival in J&K and Ladakh, across awareness, early detection, screening, diagnosis, referral and treatment.
- An integrated screening strategy for the four cancers, meant to use existing resources better, identify high-risk groups and strengthen referrals.
Named participants include Dr Ashutosh Gupta, Principal and Dean of GMC Jammu, and Dr Jyotsna Suri, Head of Pathology and Nodal Officer of GMC Jammu's Multi Disciplinary Research Unit. Attendees included officials, medical experts, researchers and programme officers.
Why it matters to students and young professionals
GMC Jammu is where many of the region's doctors, nurses and researchers train, so decisions about screening methods and data systems shape the work available to them. For everyone else, it signals where screening may eventually expand.
What has not been announced
The report gives no funding figures, rollout dates, pilot districts or quotes from the speakers. These remain to be announced.
