From Jammu's Astroturf to the National Stage: J&K's Junior Hockey Team Heads to the 2026 Nationals

While much of Jammu spent the past fortnight watching the rain, a group of the city's young hockey players was clocking early mornings on a wet-slick blue turf in Gandhi Nagar. Their reward: a ticket out of the Union Territory and onto one of Indian hockey's biggest junior stages. Jammu & Kashmir's junior men's team is set to compete in the 16th Hockey India Junior Men National Championship 2026, being played at the Coimbatore Corporation Hockey Ground in Tamil Nadu from 28 July to 8 August 2026.

For young athletes in a region where cricket and football usually soak up the spotlight, a national hockey campaign is a genuinely big deal — and this one was built almost entirely in Jammu.

The road ran through Gandhi Nagar

Hockey J&K held open selection trials on 6 July at the K.K. Hakku Astroturf Hockey Stadium in Jammu, the city's main synthetic-turf ground and the home base for competitive hockey in the Jammu division. Players were assessed on physical fitness and on-ball skill, and the shortlisted squad then moved straight into a coaching-and-conditioning camp from 7 to 24 July at the same venue — roughly two-and-a-half weeks of drills, match simulation and fitness work before the long trip south.

The eligibility bar tells you exactly who this tournament is for: it is open to players born on or after 1 January 2007, which makes it an under-19 competition and, for many in the squad, a first taste of representing J&K at the national level. Every player also had to be registered on the Hockey India Membership Unit (MU) portal and carry the standard paperwork — a Hockey India registration card, domicile certificate, Aadhaar and date-of-birth proof.

Why it matters for young Jammu

The junior nationals are the sport's most-watched talent pipeline. Scouts, state coaches and academy recruiters track these matches closely, and a strong showing here is how teenagers from smaller centres get noticed for state senior sides, sports quotas, college teams and residential academies. For a J&K player, simply being on that field alongside traditional hockey powerhouses is exposure that no amount of local practice can replicate.

It also puts Jammu's own infrastructure to work. The K.K. Hakku Astroturf is one of the few full synthetic-turf facilities in the region, and the fact that an entire national-championship camp could be run on it — through a monsoon fortnight, no less — is a quiet vote of confidence in the city's grassroots setup. The more these camps and trials happen at home, the shorter the distance a talented 15- or 16-year-old has to travel to be seen.

If you play, or want to, the pathway is more open than it looks. The first step is registering on the Hockey India MU portal and getting a Hockey India ID — that single registration is what makes you eligible for trials like this one. From there, keep an eye on Hockey J&K and the Directorate of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) for trial notices, which are usually announced only a week or two ahead. Age-group trials (sub-junior, junior) come around every season, so missing one cycle is not the end of the road.

For families weighing whether sport is "worth it," the calculus in J&K has shifted in recent years, with hundreds of local athletes moving into government jobs through sports quotas and selections. A junior-nationals appearance is one of the credential-building rungs on that ladder.

What to watch from July 28

The championship runs as a multi-division event with teams grouped into pools, so J&K's campaign will unfold over several days of group matches before the knockout stages. Results and fixtures are posted through Hockey India's official channels as the tournament progresses. Win or lose, the more useful number for Jammu will be how many of these players are back on the K.K. Hakku turf next season — fitter, tested against the best, and one step closer to a senior cap.

For now, a busload of Jammu teenagers is carrying the UT's colours to Coimbatore. That is worth a cheer from home.
