"From Classroom to Career: Becoming an AI Professional" was the title of an IEEE tech talk held on 11 October at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra, organised by the university's IEEE Student Branch in association with IIT Jammu.
The speaker was Mukul Joshi, Program Director at the IIT Bombay Trust Lab. Drawing on his experience in software research and development, product engineering and industry leadership, he spoke about career opportunities in AI, emerging career pathways and the professional skills students need, and stressed aligning academic learning with what industry needs. The audience was students, research scholars, faculty and IEEE members.
Who was there
Dr Naveen Kumar Gondhi and Dr Pooja Sharma, faculty coordinators of the IEEE SMVDU branch, coordinated the session. Dr Anil Saini, Senior Scientific Officer at IIT Jammu, and Dr Sanjay Mohan Sharma, CEO of the SMVDU Technology Business Incubation Centre, were also present. The report gives no attendance figure and no direct quotes from the speaker.
Why it matters
For students in the Jammu belt, talks like this are free windows into how the AI job market is structured. If you are early in your degree, the two takeaways reported are practical ones: match what you study to what employers ask for, and build the non-technical professional skills alongside the technical ones. Student IEEE branches are one of the easiest ways to meet speakers like this on campus.
