Missed a seat in JoSAA? You are not out of the game yet. The Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) runs its Special Rounds after the main JoSAA counselling ends, precisely to fill the NIT, IIIT, SPA and other GFTI seats that fall vacant when allotted students don't report or upgrade elsewhere. For J&K's engineering aspirants — including anyone eyeing a home-state seat at NIT Srinagar — this is the final route into a centrally-funded institute this cycle.
The catch is speed. CSAB Special is only two rounds, and the calendar runs in days:
Registration & fee payment: 28 July – 3 August 2026 (now closed)
Choice filling & locking: up to 5 August
Round 1 seat allotment: 6 August, by 5 PM
Round 2 seat allotment: 12 August, by 5 PM
Physical reporting (NIT+ candidates): 13 – 18 August
The rules that trip people up
Two things surprise students every year. First, CSAB Special needs a fresh registration — your JoSAA login does not carry over. Second, IITs are not part of it; the special rounds cover NITs, IIITs, SPAs and other Government-Funded Technical Institutes only. So if you registered in time, the decisive step now is your choice list: with only two rounds to play, the order in which you rank branches and institutes does most of the work.
The J&K angle
NIT Srinagar is the region's flagship NIT, and home-state candidates compete under a state quota there — which makes CSAB Special especially relevant for J&K students who fell just short in JoSAA. Plenty of Jammu students also travel out for NIT seats in other states, and the special round is where those last vacancies surface. If you are in the running, treat the allotment days as hard deadlines: an allotted seat you don't accept and report for on time simply moves to the next candidate.
