BC Road-Roop Nagar Flyover: What the PWD Concept Plan Says, and What It Doesn't Yet

A reported PWD concept plan puts a two-tube elevated corridor on small central pillars, so no buildings need to be demolished. Cost, timeline and approval are not stated.

If you commute between Ambphalla, Janipur and BC Road, you already know the bottleneck. A flyover proposed for that stretch is now on paper, and the first detail to emerge is the one residents were worried about: it is not planned to need any demolition.

What the plan reportedly says

Greater Kashmir reported on 11 October, citing media reports and sources, that the Public Works Department's concept plan rules out demolishing existing structures for the proposed BC Road-Roop Nagar flyover. As described:

  • It would start on BC Road a few metres before Rehari Chungi Chowk and run toward Roop Nagar, landing at the T-junction.
  • It would stand on single, small-diameter pillars along the middle of the existing road, so that, in the sources' words, the corridor can be built "without disturbing the structures located along both sides of the road."
  • It would carry two-way traffic, with each tube about 5.5 metres wide.
  • The second tube would rest a few metres ahead of Ambphalla Chowk towards Manda.

Why this corridor

The report describes the Ambphalla-Janipur corridor as chronically congested, with traffic through Ambphalla, Janipur, BC Road and Rehari having grown substantially while road space has stayed largely unchanged. That matters to students and early-career workers who commute daily and to anyone renting or running a small business along it.

What has not been announced

The report gives no length, cost, funding source, approval status or construction date, and the plan is described as a concept plan, not a sanctioned project. It attributes the details to unnamed sources, and no PWD statement was available to us. Pillars in the middle of the road would also change how the road works during construction; the report does not say how traffic would be managed. Until an official release appears, treat everything above as a proposal.

What to watch

  • An official PWD or Smart City statement with the alignment, cost and timeline.
  • Whether a detailed project report is approved and funds are sanctioned.
  • A traffic diversion plan for the construction period.
