The humble post office now does more than parcels. At a press conference on World Post Day, October 9, Chief Postmaster General Sagar Hanuman Singh said post offices are "turning into comprehensive citizen service centres," PTI reported.
For anyone selling something
The Dak Ghar Niryat Kendra (DNK) supports international exports from Jammu and Kashmir. It helps exporters, artisans, craftsmen and small businesses with export paperwork, the postal bill of export, customs clearance, packaging, and booking and tracking. Products named include walnuts, saffron, handicrafts, carpets, pashmina and handloom goods. For a young seller with an Instagram shop, that is a route to overseas buyers without hiring a freight agent. The report does not say where in Jammu the centre is, so ask your nearest head post office.
For everyone else
- Aadhaar enrolment and updates.
- Postal Life Insurance.
- Post Office Passport Seva Kendras, run with the Ministry of External Affairs, bringing passport services closer to people in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh.
- Modern track-and-trace software and self-booking kiosks at major post offices.
The network reaches Doda, Kishtwar, Reasi, Rajouri, Gurez, Machil, Tetwal, Keran and Zanskar, according to the report.
Dates to note
National Postal Week runs October 9 to 15. The annual Dhai Akhar letter-writing competition, which encourages handwritten letters especially among younger people, takes entries until October 31; the report does not give age categories, so check the rules first.
Service lists come from a press briefing; confirm availability, fees and documents at your post office or on indiapost.gov.in before relying on them.
