Fourteen names went up on the SKUAST-Jammu notice board this week, and the list is a small map of who actually takes the courses nobody writes about.
The university has gone to its waitlist for two programmes — the one-year Diploma in Agriculture and the one-year Diploma in Horticulture — after selected candidates failed to report. The notification is No. 137 (Acad.) of 2026, dated 7 September 2026, from the Office of the Registrar. Those called must report to the Registrar at the Main Campus, Chatha, during office hours, on or before 9 September, with original documents, two sets of self-attested photocopies and three passport photographs.
If you are on that list, that is the whole message and the clock is short. But the more useful story here is the one underneath it, because these two diplomas are among the least-discussed post-school options in Jammu.
What they are, and what they cost
They are one year, at an ICAR university, on the Chatha campus. The first term fee is ₹13,000.
Set that beside the default assumption after Class 12 — a three or four-year degree, with the cost and time that comes with it — and the appeal is obvious for anyone who wants a qualification that is vocational, quick and attached to a real institution rather than a coaching signboard.
The merit range tells you something
The Agriculture diploma took nine candidates in this round, with merit running from 67.8% down to 48.83%. Horticulture took five, from 66.4% to 55.4%.
Those are not cut-offs that lock out an ordinary student. A Class 12 result in the fifties is enough to be in this conversation, which is not true of most routes ending in an ICAR university's name on the certificate.
And so does the district spread
The Agriculture list runs Poonch, Ramban (five of the nine), Kishtwar and Jammu (two). The Horticulture list is Jammu (two) and Rajouri (three).
So a campus on the edge of Jammu city is drawing most of this intake from the hill districts. For students there, a one-year diploma at Chatha is a realistic move in a way a four-year degree in another state is not.
Before anyone celebrates
Selection is provisional. The university states that admission stands cancelled if any information furnished is found to be incorrect, misrepresented or concealed. That is boilerplate on every such notification and it is also enforced, so the documents you carry to Chatha should match what you filed.
If you are not on this list, the thing to take away is the cycle itself: these diplomas exist, they cost ₹13,000 a term, and they go to a waitlist most years because people who are selected do not turn up. Watching the SKUAST-Jammu admission-notices page when the next cycle opens is a low-effort habit with an unusually good return.
