Jammu city recorded 66 mm of rain in the 24 hours to 8:30 AM on Sunday — the highest anywhere in J&K — and it showed on the roads. If your week involves a commute to college, coaching or an exam centre, this is what to plan around.
What flooded
Water pooled across a long list of localities, several of them on routes students use daily: Talab Tillo, Bhagwati Nagar, Canal Road, Rajinder Nagar, Janipur, Paloura, Krishna Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Sanjay Nagar, Muthi, Bantalab and Lakhdata Bazar. The Jammu-Poonch national highway near Bhagwati Nagar and the Jammu-RS Pura road near Kulliyan both saw severe waterlogging. An old, locked house that had been vacated months earlier collapsed at Shaheedi Chowk in the old city around 7:30 AM; no one was hurt.
Highways to check before you travel
The Jammu-Kishtwar national highway was suspended after a mudslide at Ragi Nallah, with restoration underway.
NH-244 was blocked at points in the Chenab Valley by mudslides.
On the Srinagar-Jammu NH-44, traffic police have been advising daytime-only travel and no unnecessary halts on the landslide-prone Ramban-Banihal stretch during heavy spells.
If you are heading out of the city this week — to Katra, home, or an exam centre up the valley — confirm the road status with the Traffic Control Units before you book, rather than assuming a route is open.
What the forecast says
The Meteorological Department expects scattered to widespread rain over the next 24 hours, with a decreasing trend over the following two days. A fresh spell of light-to-moderate rain is flagged for around 29-31 August, with the usual monsoon caution about flash floods and landslides in vulnerable pockets. The Jammu Municipal Corporation says its Quick Response Teams cleared waterlogging within an hour of complaints and points to ongoing nallah-drainage works as the longer-term fix.
None of this is a reason to cancel your week — but a 66 mm night is a good reminder to leave earlier, keep a check on the highway advisories, and not gamble on a flooded underpass.
