If you're a young graduate in Jammu staring at the same wall everyone hits after college — no experience, so no job; no job, so no experience — there's a government-run route worth knowing inside out. The PM Internship Scheme (PMIS) places youth inside real companies from India's top 500 corporations for a full 12 months, with money in your account from the start. And J&K has been getting a dedicated slice of the slots.
What you actually get
This isn't a token “exposure” programme. Selected interns receive:
₹5,000 per month for the 12-month internship — made up of ₹4,500 paid directly by the government (via DBT into your bank account) and ₹500 from the host company's CSR funds.
A one-time grant of ₹6,000 on joining, to help with incidental costs.
Insurance cover under government schemes during the internship period.
Twelve months of genuine, on-the-job experience at a brand-name company — the line on your CV that breaks the no-experience trap.
Who qualifies (read this carefully)
The scheme is deliberately aimed at young people who are not already settled into a career or a full-time course. You're eligible if you are:
An Indian citizen aged 21 to 24.
At least Class 10 pass (higher qualifications are welcome, but matric is the floor).
Not in full-time employment and not enrolled in full-time education at the time of applying.
From a household with an annual family income below ₹8 lakh.
That last point is what makes PMIS especially relevant for Jammu's middle- and lower-income families: it's built for the student who needs the stipend, not the one who already has options.
The J&K angle
This is not a far-off Delhi scheme that bypasses the region. As of this year, around 132 internship slots were earmarked for Jammu & Kashmir youth, with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs — the nodal ministry running PMIS — signalling that the number could rise after local demand. A new Regional Director office covering J&K, Ladakh and Uttarakhand has also been set up to support participating businesses and handle grievances, which should make it easier for local candidates and companies to plug in. More than 300 companies have been taking part nationally.
How to apply
The entire process is online and free — there is no application fee, and you should never pay anyone who claims they can “arrange” a seat for you.

Register and build your profile (education, location, interests).
Browse openings posted by partner companies and apply directly to the roles that fit you. You can choose by sector and, where possible, location.
Watch the portal for application rounds — PMIS opens applications in batches through the year as companies post fresh openings, so set a reminder to check back rather than assuming you've missed it.
A few honest pointers
It's a full-time commitment. The internship runs on full working hours for 12 months; part-time participation isn't allowed. Plan around that before you apply.
Pick roles you'd actually learn from. The stipend is modest, so the real payoff is the skill and the brand-name experience. Aim for a function — finance, operations, IT, manufacturing, marketing — you want to grow in.
Keep documents ready: identity proof, education certificates, bank details for DBT, and an income reference for the eligibility cap.
Use the official portal only. Any “agent” demanding money is a scam.
For a 22-year-old in Jammu with a degree and no foothold, PMIS is one of the cleaner shots going: a year inside a serious company, a stipend that covers the basics, and an experience line that finally answers the “what have you done?” question. The slots are limited and the rounds move — so the candidates who win them are simply the ones who registered early and kept checking.
